Swimming lessons for autistic children in Southport
Every child deserves to be safe and happy in the water. Some children just need a different approach to get there — more time, fewer distractions, and an instructor who understands why a busy poolside or an unexpected splash can be overwhelming.
Charlotte is an accredited provider with Autism Swim, an organisation specialising in swimming and water safety for autistic people and people with additional needs. You can see her provider listing on their Find a Provider directory.
What the accreditation involves
Autism Swim accreditation is specialist training in teaching swimming to autistic learners. It covers how to structure a lesson so it is predictable and calm, how to communicate in ways that work for the child, how to recognise when a child is becoming overwhelmed, and the water safety risks that particularly affect autistic children.
How lessons are adapted
- One-to-one lessons, so there are no other children to compete with for attention
- A consistent instructor, the same routine each week, and no surprises
- We go at your child's pace — some children spend several lessons simply getting comfortable being near the water, and that is completely fine
- Communication adapted to your child, whether that is visual, verbal, or hands-on
- Parents are welcome on the poolside throughout
- Sessions at quieter times where possible
Why water safety matters so much
Water tends to hold a strong attraction for many autistic children, which makes swimming and water safety skills especially important. Learning to be calm, capable and safe in the water is a skill for life — and for many families it opens up holidays, days out and swimming parties that previously felt off-limits.
Getting started
There is no assessment to pass and no waiting list to join. Get in touch and tell us about your child — what they enjoy, what they find difficult, and what you would like them to get out of lessons. We will find a time that suits and take it from there.
